A little story about a girl
My mother-in-law proposed a little game while we were all quarantined. Inspired by the story The Decameron, a tale of story telling during the Black Death, she proposed we write stories on a theme each week. The first theme was "weather or sky phenomona".
Sally dreamed about flying. It was her favorite dream. Floating above the house, above the town, she could see all the tiny little people rushing about like the ants in the backyard. She also dreamed about puppies sometimes, that was her second favorite dream. Daddy said she could get a puppy when she was done with all the hospital visits. She already picked out her puppy. She wanted a husky with bright blue eyes just like the sky.
Today she wasn’t in the hospital. She was somewhere else. It was a nice place surrounded by the forest. The nurses were really nice, but they looked at her with sad eyes. There were a bunch of old people here too, but they stayed in their rooms and she couldn’t play games with them. She had been here for almost a week. Momma said it was better than being at home. The nurses could take care of all the little things that needed to be done.
Sally was tired nearly all the time. She didn’t mind so much, it gave her more time to dream.
Momma was sitting in a rocking chair by her bed. Grandma and grandpa came to visit today. They tried not to be sad, but she could tell.
It was getting harder to talk now, it hurt to breathe. Momma and daddy sat on either side of the bed, holding her hands. Sally turned ever so slightly and spoke in a whisper, “Momma, I’m going to miss you.”
Sally was in the sky again, like the dreams but not dreaming this time. She was free to be, unencumbered by the pain and sickness. She soared.
